Academic Team Senior Recognition

A Strong Finish

As late as Feb. 9, Fairfield’s Academic Team had a 1-7 record and was tied for 2nd-to-last place.    Less than one month later, though, on Senior Night, the Indians finished the regular season at 9-9, clinching 4th place and a top bracket seed in the GMC tournament on Saturday.

The Indians did so in a thrilling manner by sweeping Colerain Wednesday. That sweep included tying the score on the final regulation question after being 10 points behind, then tying the score again on the final question of overtime. Then junior Lucas Gagne won the match with a 1-question Golden Goal overtime victory.

The Academic Team’s GMC fourth-place finish helped Fairfield have one of its strongest Winter Sports seasons in years in the race for the GMC All Sports Trophy, according to Athletic Director Aaron Blankenship.

The Colerain sweep also capped a great regular season for the five seniors on the team, which includes co-captains Gabby LeFevre and Maddie Closson (front) and Alyssa Farrell, Skyler Ficklin, and Samuela Osae (back).

Pre-match festivities for Senior Night included snacks and dancing in Coach Mark Braam’s classroom. Post-match, during the next day’s practice, the Indians celebrated the comeback with a ceremonial ringing of the Victory Bell.
